Schlumberger is one the world’s leading suppliers of technology, integrated project management and information solutions to clients from the global hydrocarbons industry. The company’s ties with the country began in 1935, when it sent its French engineers to perform measurements on oil wells in Northern Borneo. The first Bruneian was sent for training in 1971 by the firm outside the region. Local infrastructure was gradually developed, and the company went on to recruit more Bruneian personnel to fill various positions within the firm.
More technological support was provided in 1975, and in 1978, the Seria Training Center was opened to train both local and foreign Wireline engineers. In 1984, Schlumberger Wireline & Testing Services built an operating base in Seria to support Brunei Shell Petroleum (BSP). The company then forged links with academia in 1995 by beginning an annual sponsorship of the ‘Best Presentation’ award for the Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) Master’s in Petroleum GeoScience Programme.
The first decade of the new century was eventful for the oilfield technology services firm. Year 2000 witnessed the setting up of the Schlumberger Seismic Interpretation Center at BSP headquarters to support the Geophysicists group. Four years later in 2004, the BIMA integrated rig services project commenced. Its specific design and versatility have made it a cornerstone of Brunei’s ambitious exploration and development programme in the Seria North Flank field, creating more job opportunities for Bruneians. To-date, Schlumberger has successfully achieved up to 70 per cent local employment at its Brunei office.
In the same year, Schlumberger reinforced its commitment to academia by donating Petrel E&P software platform to UBD. The software allows geoscientists and engineers to interpret subsurface data and build 3D dynamic models with speed and precision. In 2006, scholarships were offered to talented young graduates to support educational development in Petroleum Engineering and Science. The company continues to provide the Petrel and PetroMod Software to UBD.
The company also offers work internship pro- grammes for students. In 2017, Schlumberger em- ployed six interns, spreading across all functions, including product lines, personnel, HSE and procurement.
Schlumberger adopts a culture of empowerment and educates its people and the community. In line with this, it holds a yearly Schlumberger Excellence in Education Development (SEED) Programme. Through SEED, Schlumberger trains employees, retirees, volunteers and educators to share their passion for learning and science with students the world over. This programme is also aimed to raise awareness and to cultivate the safety culture among the youths in the country.
Schlumberger plays an active role in community activities, an example of which is the HSE for Youth Programmes, an initiative which reaches out to young people aged seven to 18 and represents an extension of Schlumberger’s ongoing commitment to health, safety, and the environment – a commitment embedded in the way Schlumberger works around the world.
As part of its 80th anniversary celebrations, the company organised a SEED & HSE event for youths at Sekolah Rendah Muhammad ‘Alam, Seria in September last year. The event focused on science, technology, safety and health. One hundred and twenty one students from 21 schools participated in this event with 22 Schlumberger team members leading the students.
For the first time in its history in Brunei, Schlumberger organised a ‘Lend a Hand, Together We Can’ charity run in October 2016 in conjunction with its 80th anniversary celebrations. Together with partners and sponsors from various industries, it managed to raise over B$50,000 for the Society for the
Management of Autism Related Issues in Training, Education and Resources (SMARTER Brunei) and Pusat Ehsan Al-Ameerah Al-Hajjah Maryam. During the event, the company honed its safety message through games and activities. With participants from all districts in Brunei, the event brought fun and excitement to the quiet Seria town.
With a significant 80-year milestone achieved in 2016, Schlumberger endeavours to upkeep its momentum in nation building and its commitment to LBD and EIDPMO directives.
