SUSTAINABLE & GREEN BUSINESS
Turning Over A Green Leaf
A staggering 2.1 to 2.3 billion waste is produced every year, from packaging to electronics and food scraps. Despite these alarming figures, global waste management infrastructure remains lacking.Sustainable development, particularly in the green and blue economies, plays a pivotal role in maintaining Brunei’s reputation as the “Green Jewel of Borneo” while supporting the goals outlined in Aspiration 4 of its Economic Blueprint. This aspiration emphasises reducing the country’s carbon footprint and fostering economic diversification through sustainable practices.
Going Green preneur
Addressing the waste crisis requires a shift in mindset, treating waste as a resource. The rise of green businesses in Brunei reflects the growing awareness of sustainability among entrepreneurs particularly youth who are increasingly venturing into eco-conscious industries.
The introduction of Brunei’s first dedicated low-waste refill physical store in 2021 marked a significant milestone in the country’s evolving green economy. The store was born from the realisation that Brunei was the only ASEAN nation without such a retail concept.
With a mission to reduce single-use plastics and inspire environmentally conscious consumer choices, the founders aimed to fill this gap. Operating within Brunei’s relatively small and niche retail market posed challenges, but low- waste products are steadily gaining traction among eco-conscious shoppers. Educating customers about sustainable living has been central to the initiative, together with raising awareness on waste reduction and promoting products designed to support a circular economy.
The local market is also seeing an upstick in green products, including a range of plant-based skincare solutions. Locally handcrafted and free from toxic ingredients, these products ease concerns over harmful chemicals which are prevalent in commercial skincare products, including those marketed for infants.

For some businesses, their mission goes beyond product development. They aim to educate Bruneians about the benefits of natural skincare and raise awareness of the potential hazards posed by mainstream products. Sustainability is a significant influence on their business operations, from sourcing eco-friendly ingredients to using biodegradable packaging and energy-efficient manufacturing processes. These practices reflect their commitment to environmental responsibility and societal well-being.
Green entrepreneurship plays a crucial role in addressing environmental sustainability while contributing to economic diversification. They set an example for responsible consumption and production, ensuring a better future for Brunei and the world
Empowering Communities For A Sustainable Future

Brunei’s proactive initiatives towards achieving zero waste reflect a concerted effort to address environmental challenges and promote sustainable living practices within the nation. The country has embarked on a multifaceted approach encompassing public awareness campaigns, policy advocacy, and community engagement initiatives. Through workshops, community programmes and school-based initiatives such as climate change education and zero-waste workshops, locals gain more insights into environmental awareness and sustainable practices. These efforts aim to instil a culture of waste reduction, recycling, and responsible consumption habits among citizens.
Notably, many establishments have adopted eco-friendly practices like Substituting plastic straws with strawless lids and phasing out plastic bags altogether. This collective endeavour underscores the commitment to fostering sustainable habits and reducing waste across Brunei.
However, challenges persist. Education and community engagement are a necessity in driving long-term change as the nation balances economic growth with environmental stewardship. Achieving zero-waste societies demands collaboration at all levels where consumers must adopt sustainable habits, authorities and industries need to prioritise financing and policy for waste reduction, especially considering its disproportionate impact on marginalised communities.
Recognising and celebrating zero waste initiatives across all sectors is not just a step towards environmental preservation, but also a crucial contribution to the realisation of the ambitious goals outlined in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
