Brunei Darussalam has seen an increasing range of electric vehicles (EVs) on the market in recent years, complemented by the availability of charging facilities. In 2022, Brunei Shell Marketing Company Sdn Bhd (BSM) launched the country’s first retail rapid charging station. Various distributors have also demonstrated their commitment to developing the charging infrastructure in Brunei, with strategically positioned charging points across the country.
In July 2023, a memorandum of agreement (MoA) was signed between Centre for Transport Research (CfTR) of Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) and Grand Motors Sdn Bhd for a research collaboration on the development of a solar-powered EV charging station.
The primary objectives of this research are to assess the viability of implementing such a charging station and to evaluate the economic factors associated with its operation. By conducting this analysis, the research aims to support and promote the use of EVs in Brunei, supporting the country’s sustainable and clean transportation goals.
As outlined in the Brunei Darussalam National Climate Change Policy (BNCCP), Brunei aims to increase its EV share up to 60 per cent of total annual sales by 2035. This strategy will be carried out by the Electric Vehicle Joint Task Force (EVJTF), co-led by the Ministry of Transport and Infocommunications (MTIC) and Department of Energy at the Prime Minister’s Office.
The EVJTF recently completed a twoyear Electric Vehicles Pilot Programme, which began in 2021. The taskforce is currently assessing options to further move forward the strategy.
EV potential
As an oil and gas producing country, Brunei has a high potential to become renowned and a great example in the world stage if the country can one day fully embrace EVs. This was shared by a senior official from BYD (‘Build Your Dreams’), a leading Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) manufacturer.
“In my opinion, I believe that Brunei can push to popularise EVs. The pace can even be faster than Singapore. This is because from the aspects of overall economy, environmental conservation as well as energy, EVs are essential for the Brunei market,” General Manager of Asia Pacific Auto Sales Division from BYD Auto Industry Company Limited Liu Xueliang said.
Talking about the important component for EVs to be successful in Brunei, Liu Xueliang added that EV is a new industry. As such, its progress or development can only be achieved with government support. “For example, in China, the government provided vast support for the progress of EVs,” he said.
However, such support will not be permanent, said Liu Xueliang. It will slowly decrease as the industry grows. “Many countries have provided taxfree and incentives for EVs. I hope that Brunei will provide EVs a fair chance to progress further.”
