With a high GDP per capita and no income tax
implemented to its residents, it is unsurprising that
Bruneians have a high disposable income compared
to other economies in the region. Thus, with a strong
consumer culture, several commercial hubs have
risen in recent years to meet the nation’s retail
demands.
Shopping Centres
Gadong, one of Brunei’s main commercial hubs
garners high traffic daily. Located smack in the
middle is The Mall, a complex which houses various
amenities including a 5-star hotel, a cineplex and
numerous food and retail outlets.
A stone’s throw away from the Brunei International
Airport is a cluster of shopping centres, namely
the Airport Mall, Times Square and Citis Square.
Developed over an old airport area, the area is known
for its numerous eatery options, supermarkets and
multiple mobile and electrical goods outlets.
The Mabohai Shopping complex offers stores such as
Starbucks, Bossini, The face Shop, L’Occitane, Royce’
Chocolate, Boost, Toys ‘R’ Us as well as a Mini
Cooper showroom. The complex is best known for its
long-time resident, supermarket Supa Save.
Kiulap is another major commercial hub, constantly
bustling with life. The area houses a mix of old and
new establishments. Found in the vicinity are various
cafes, supermarkets, as well as two hotels.
Setia Kenangan II is a recently established complex
in Kiulap, housing a variety of retail outlets such as
sporting goods, home improvement, boutiques and
health food among others. Found in the area are a
variety of modern, hipster cafes.
Annajat Complex is located in Beribi. It features a
supermarket, an assortment of eateries and stores
offering goods from clothing to accessories.
Aman Hills Shopping Centre is located at Jalan
Aman, Sungai Tilong Muara. Designed as a family-
oriented shopping destination, Aman Hills offers
spacious shopping spaces, luxurious dining and one
of a kind leisure entertainment for families.
Residents of Kuala Belait flock to KB Sentral. This
mall is constructed to mirror the Times Square
Shopping Centre in Berakas, with its similar line up
of restaurants and retail units.
Yayasan Shopping Complex is located in the heart
of Brunei. Best known for its high-end stores and
restaurants, Yayasan caters to shopping needs of
locals and tourists.
Supermarkets
Brunei is home to a number of different supermarkets,
from those offering local and regional goods to goods
sourced from other parts of the world.
Hua Ho is one of the country’s oldest and most well-
known department stores. With 10 outlets across the
country, it is also one of the most easily accessible
supermarkets. The latest Hua Ho is located at the
new OneCity Shopping Centre.
With outlets in Gadong, Beribi, Mabohai and Panaga,
Supa Save is Brunei's premier supermarket. It is best
known for offering imported goods from Europe,
America and Australia, making it a popular place for
expats looking for a slice of home. The latest Supa
Save outlet was recently opened at One Riverside.
Featuring gourmet food items and high quality
household products, this Supa Save also offers a
ready-made food and drinks for eat-in or take-away.
Other supermarkets in Brunei include Soon Lee, Jaya
Hypermart, Utama Grand, Milimewah and Sim Kim
Huat.
Handicraft and souvenirs
Visitors looking for a unique piece of Brunei can
head over to the Brunei Arts and Handicraft Centre
(BAHC). It is stocked with handcrafted products that
reflect Brunei’s oldest art forms such as silverwork,
brass work and weaving. The centre has outlets in
Kota Batu, the Brunei International Airport, Gadong,
Yayasan and the Royal Regalia Building.
