The government awards scholarships to study abroad for
courses unavailable at the Universiti Brunei Darussalam
(UBD). Many Bruneians continue their studies in the UK,
US and Australia, meeting people from all backgrounds
and learning each other’s culture.
Apart from the Brunei government, students may obtain
scholarships from other sources to study abroad. In 2018,
five Bruneians were selected to undertake postgraduate
studies in Australia under the prestigious Australia
Awards-ASEAN Scholarship. Another scholarship
available is the prestigious Chevening Scholarship Award,
funded by the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
Only individuals who demonstrate leadership potential
and have strong academic background are awarded the
Chevening Scholarship. To date, 47 Bruneians have been
awarded this scholarship.
Studying abroad is not limited to undergraduate
programmes. In 2017, Brunei collaborated with the
Academy of Korean Studies (AKS) to launch AKS
Graduate Fellowship, a non-degree programme that ran
for six months, in which Bruneian students were provided
airfare, monthly allowance, access to AKS facilities and
accommodation.
As part of UBD’s GenNext Discovery Year, students who
satisfy certain prerequisites have the chance to enroll
in a study abroad programme in one of UBD’s partner
universities, such as the University of California, Berkeley
(US) and University of Southampton (UK). The Discovery
Year develops students personally, academically and
professionally, by providing opportunities to engage with
international communities, and prolonged exposure to the
professional workplace and business world. UBD has more
than 95 partner universities across 18 different countries,
with 35 partner universities in ASEAN member countries
for the Discovery Year Study Abroad programme.
