Brunei Arts and Handicraft

Training Centre

First established in 1975, the centre – which then

moved to its current location at Jalan Residency

along Brunei River – was set up to preserve

Bruneian traditional arts and handicraft. The

centre displays various items such as hand-woven

baskets, silverware, brassware, jong sarat and

carved wood items. Those who are interested may

also learn traditional arts and handicraft practices

through courses as offered by the centre.

Opening hours:

Mon to Thurs and Sun: 7:45am – 5pm

Fri: 7:45am – 11:30am and 2:30pm – 5pm

The Brunei History Centre

Inaugurated in 1982, The Brunei History Centre is

situated right next to the Royal Regalia Building. The

centre was set up to perform research pertaining to

the history of Brunei Darussalam, specifically on the

background and genealogies of the Sultans of Brunei.

Opening hours:

Mon to Thurs and Sat: 8:30am – 4:14pm

Fri: 8:30am – 11:30am and 2:30pm – 4:30pm

Sun: Closed

Brunei Darussalam Maritime Museum

The latest addition to Brunei’s collection of

museums is the Maritime Museum, opened

in 2015. Built on a 8.75-hectare land at a cost

of BND5 million, the front of the building was

designed to depict the front view of a ship. The

museum – part of the 10

National Development

Plan – aims to illustrate Brunei’s significant role as

a centre of maritime trade in ancient times.

The museum is home to three galleries, with the

main exhibition being the display of a shipwreck

believed to be from China found in 1997, which

includes more than 13,000 porcelain artefacts

and Pulau Terendak – an island unearthed at Kota

Batu’s archaeological site.

The Floating Museum of Brunei

(Kampong Saba Museum)

Opened in 1960, this mini museum houses a

variety of artefacts including items from Japan’s

occupation of Brunei, Chinese antiquities from the

Ming and Sung dynasties, and a collection of old

currencies. Situated in Kampong Ayer, visitors

must ride water taxis to access the museum.

Daily: 9am – 5pm

Tamoi Tengah Cultural Village

Located in the picturesque Kampong Tamoi Tengah

in Kampong Ayer, the cultural village lets guests

experience cultural shows and activities such as

bird watching and traditional fishing. The village’s

Brunei style house, embellished with traditional

finery and antiques dating back 300 years.

Kampong Ayer Cultural &

Tourism Gallery

Officiated in 2009, the BND3 million Kampong

Ayer Cultural & Tourism Gallery aims to highlight

Kampong Ayer’s history while preserving Brunei’s

heritage as well as bringing tourist traffic to

Kampong Ayer. The building houses five mini

galleries which illustrate Kampong Ayer’s history

and origin, with handicraft and relics from a bygone

era also on display.

Other features of the gallery include a multimedia

display showcasing information on various tourist

sites in Brunei, an audiovisual room which plays

archived footages of life in Kampong Ayer, a

souvenir shop selling traditional handicraft, an

observation tower allowing visitors a stunning

panoramic view of Kampong Ayer and the capital’s

skyline. The gallery is accessible by taking a water

taxi from the Royal Wharf.
