VISITOR INFORMATION
The airport saw a major upgrade through its terminal expansion and modernisation
project helmed under the Brunei Economic Development Board (BEDB). The project
was worth approximately BND150 million. The project resulted in a 100 per cent
increase in the airport’s annual passenger handling capacity from 1.5 million to
three million people and a 50 per cent improvement in the airport’s baggage reclaim
system, capable of handling up to 1,330 bags per hour.
The project aimed to bring Brunei’s airport up to par with other major airports through
its refurbished and modernised terminal, positioning itself as a viable air logistics hub
in the region. With improvements in design, aesthetics, service quality, convenience,
safety and comfort, BEDB hopes the airport can serve tourists as a welcoming
gateway into the country.

Useful Malay Phrases
Malays comprise a large percentage of Brunei Darussalam’s
population and Malay is the Sultanate’s official language.
However, English is widely used and understood in Brunei,
an attribution of its ethnically diverse population. It is often
used as the lingua franca in the residents’ everyday lives in
addition to conducting business and in schools. Thus, it is
easy to obtain information in English for tourists and visitors.
In Brunei’s Chinese community, Mandarin is commonly
understood and spoken.
Tourists and visitors are recommended to learn a few phrases
in the local lingo when visiting the country.
