The availability of fitness centres, gyms and studios plays an imperative role in advocating the good health and well-being of the people in the Sultanate, while also supporting the nation’s interest in adopting a healthy lifestyle.
In this regard, the increase of fitness centres across Brunei Darussalam over the years has attracted a large base of active and regular gym goers, encompassing the differing profiles of individuals. Such establishments have witnessed a steady rise in participation among members and walk-in guests amid the desire to accomplish specified fitness goals or targets.
Premium fitness boutiques have entered the market over the last few years to accommodate guests who aim for quality and access to internationally-proven training and a workout activity which truly satisfies their needs. Personal training services also provide individuals a specific programme suited to their fitness needs and goals. The wide selection of activities has contributed to the expansion of the fitness scene in Brunei, offering a healthy choice for fitness-minded individuals.
As the country ushered in the start of a new decade, boxing classes have been shaping into a fast-growing activity. Trainers not only teach the fundamentals, techniques and basics of boxing movements, drills and routines but also incorporate elements of fitness that help build their speed, strength and concentration.
Aside from hitting the gym, hiking has become one of the country’s preferred sports and recreational activities, and it has been accepted by the wider community including seniors. Bukit Shahbandar Recreational Park in Jerudong, Tasek Lama Recreational Park in the capital and also Bukit Sipatir in Kampong Subok are a few of the most popular hiking spots.
Bukit Menangis Recreational Park in Keruhai, Kampong Lumapas ‘B’ was officially opened last year, providing hikers with more options for their outdoor activities.
Jogging is another popular choice for fitness enthusiasts as it doesn’t require any equipment apart from a pair of sports shoes to get started. The Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium, Damuan Park and Tasek Lama Recreational Park are popular spots among avid joggers. Many can be seen jogging around the tracks early in the morning or late afternoon, especially on weekends.
Having gained popularity in the past years, cycling has been recognised as a national pastime. Cyclists can often be seen pedalling on weekends, especially on Sundays during the Bandarku Ceria programme.
