is in discussion with another 25 local SMEs for
greater collaboration.
Western Foods & Packaging Sdn Bhd
Marsa Yag Sanayi Ve Ticaret Anonim Sirketi
(Marsa Yag), a Turkish-based company, helped
establish Western Foods and Packaging Sdn Bhd
(WFP) to manufacture margarine, oil and fats
products. As one of Turkey’s pioneers in edible
oil and fats manufacturing, Marsa Yag exports to
over 65 countries.
In November 2017, His Royal Highness Prince
Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah ibni His Majesty Sultan
Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah,
the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the
Prime Minister’s Office opened WFP’s BND50
million manufacturing plant in Serasa. The plant
is capable of producing 200 tonnes of margarine
per day at full capacity, thus diversifying Brunei’s
economy and leading Brunei towards its national
Brunei Vision 2035.
The products are Halal-certified by the Brunei
Islamic Religious Council (MUIB) and are
intended to serve the growing global market
demand for quality Halal food products. They
will also be the first margarine and edible oil
products to be exported from Brunei.
The main raw ingredient of margarine is palm
oil. WFP sources its palm oil from Malaysia.
Their by-products can also be used as chicken
feed or to make soap and detergent. The
finished product will be exported to the ASEAN
region and beyond through Brunei’s main port,
the Muara Port.
WFP is also looking into downstream
opportunities for its products which can be
used as ingredients to make biscuit, chocolates,
pastries and ice cream.
Saahtain Asia Sdn Bhd
In November 2017, United Arab Emirates-
based Saahtain Group officially launched its
Bruneian subsidiary Saahtain Asia Sdn Bhd,
manufacturing ready-to-eat Halal meals at their
newly operational facility at the Salambigar
Industrial Park for export. Produced with locally
sourced raw materials, Saahtain Asia Sdn Bhd
products are all Brunei Halal-certified. On top of
its premium quality, the products meet global
food safety standards, being Hazard Analysis
and Critical Control Point (HACCP) certified.
Brunei is the Saahtain group’s second site of
production after Dubai. The company will focus
on producing the company’s signature line of:

– marketed for general retail

Tayyib
– designed for humanitarian aid and
disaster relief
•
TheFoodPouch
– utilised as military grade
ration packs
Saahtain’s products have been used in several
global crisis situations, including the Gaza
conflict, the earthquake in Nepal, feeding
orphans in Ghana and the Rohingya refugee
crisis.
