BUSINESS SECTORS

Since 2015, international tourist arrivals have continued

to show a positive trend towards the development of

tourism in Brunei Darussalam.

According to Brunei Tourism at the ASEAN Tourism

Forum 2020 media briefing, Brunei received

213,007 international tourists by air from January

to August 2019. The figure surpasses last year’s

total tally of 183,637.

The contributing factor for the increase of 16 per cent

year-on-year in 2019 was the high impact of travel

demands from the Far East market such as China, South

Korea and Japan. Improvements in air connectivity, local

events and international sporting meets also contributed

to the increase in tourist arrivals.

Brunei Tourism market’s focus for the coming years

includes eco-tourism, community-based tourism, Islamic

tourism, sports and adventure, and educational tourism.

The Brunei-China Year of Tourism 2020 was officially

launched on January 17, 2020, a year-long event that

will witness people-to-people and cultural exchanges

while building wider business and trade connections in

areas beyond tourism.

China is one of the top source markets for tourist

arrivals for Brunei, contributing to 43,000 tourist

arrivals by July 2019. From 2017 to 2018, the number

of Chinese tourist arrivals increased by over 20 per

cent from 54,125 to 65,563.

The tourist traffic and economic growth between the

two countries are expected to receive a boost with

the launch of the Brunei-China Year of Tourism 2020,

together with direct and increased air connectivity

between the two countries, such as the newly launched

route of Royal Brunei Airlines (RB) to Beijing.
