Borneo Bulletin Yearbook 2019

INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY & CREATIVE INDUSTRY

To succeed in the innovative and creative industry,

a country must nurture talent and provide a

supportive environment. The innovative technology

and creative industry has the potential to support

Brunei’s economic diversification and create job

opportunities, and is therefore a vital industry in

Brunei.

Brunei’s SPN 21 Education System places

Information and Communications Technology

(ICT) and creativity as one of the core elements

in the education curriculum. The government

makes continuous effort to nurture ICT skills and

creativity to foster the nation’s progress and

economic growth.

Digital Media and Internet of Things

In Brunei, the mobile phone penetration rate

has increased to 125.5 per cent, whereas the

broadband penetration rate of mobile phones

has increased to 121.2 per cent. The government

encourages local digital media startups to explore

the Internet of Things (IoT).

IoT connects devices, systems, software and

people so they can share information about their

state and external environment. BI Intelligence, a

research service, has estimated there will be more

than 24 billion IoT devices across the globe by

2020 – about four devices for every person.

As the milestone draws closer, more than USD6

billion will flow into IoT solutions and industries

such as application development, connectivity,

data storage, device hardware, security and

system integration. The investment will generate

USD13 trillion by 2025.
