BUSINESS SECTORS

Furthermore, there are several projects under

the Digital Economy Masterplan 2025 to trigger

the digital transformation process, said Minister

of Transport and Infocommunications Dato Seri

Setia Awang Abdul Mutalib bin Pehin Orang

Kaya Seri Setia Dato Paduka Haji Mohd Yusof

at a dialogue session with Legislative Council

(LegCo) members on January 13, 2021.

The projects include: the National Information

Hub as an easy information sharing platform;

digital ID to enable public access to government

services at any time; and Digital Payment Hub

to ease payment processes using smart devices.

IoT services for Brunei market

Brunei has seen a promising take-up of digital

solutions resulting from the current global

pandemic, such as e-learning, home office,

contact tracing application, and systems

powered by artificial intelligence.

Unified National Networks (UNN) has been at

the forefront in helping facilitate some of the

abovementioned solutions in the country. UNN

recently introduced a new Internet of Things (IoT)

service to deliver data only network access over

the mobile network.

The proposition offers machine-to-machine

(M2M) capabilities for devices to communicate

with each other to exchange information in

a one-to-one environment — with dedicated

centralised servers for data collection and

processing.

The IoT services enable a wide range of

applications such as monitoring an equipment

status or usage and keeping track of physical

assets. Given its broad usage, IoT services can

be applied to applications such as smart meters,

smart-parking systems, geo-location tracking

and crop monitoring.

With the successful introduction of this new

solution, UNN hopes to enable a more widespread

uptake of M2M deployment as part of its long-

term provision of IoT services offered through the

telecommunication companies in Brunei.

Cybersecurity as top priority

Headed by an interim Commissioner, Cyber

Security Brunei (CSB) started operations on

August 1, 2020 as the national cybersecurity

agency. The CSB monitors and coordinates

national efforts in addressing cybersecurity

threats and cybercrimes. It is through CSB that

strategies, policies and framework governing

cybersecurity are formulated and implemented.

With its vision of ensuring a secure and resilient

cyberspace in the country, CSB carries out three

main services: Brunei Computer Emergency

Response Team (BruCERT), National Digital

Forensic Laboratory and Cyber Watch Centre

(CWC).
