INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY
Towards achieving Brunei Vision 2035, the
Ministry of Transport and Infocommunications
(MTIC) has been continuously making
efforts for a sustainable and steady nation
development, particularly in the transport and
infocommunications sector.
In April 2020, MTIC expanded its role in
facilitating the Digital Economy Master Plan
framework and the Smart Nation Strategy Plan.
The ministry noted that its role has expanded to
include cybersecurity, e-Government, science
and technology.
The MTIC 2025, the ministry’s strategic plan
for the next five years, sets out a new vision
of a ‘Connected Smart Nation’ and the mission
of ‘Enhancing Connectivity for Great Socio-
Economic Opportunities, Innovation and High
Quality of Life’. The plan is also in concert with
the three goals of Brunei Vision 2035: ensuring
high quality of life; boasting highly education and
skilled workforce; and having a sustainable and
dynamic economy.
The ministry’s approach is guided by six core
strategies. The first is digital transformation
by showing efforts in achieving the status of a
“Smart Nation” based on digital government,
establishing digital society and digital economy
platforms.
The second strategy is ensuring sustainability of
the transport and ICT sectors. In order to improve
the public system in Brunei, MTIC aims to bring
about smart transportation through electric
vehicles and Intelligent Transport System (ITS)
pilot projects. The ministry also aims to support
active participation from stakeholders in the ICT
field, particularly through the Brunei ICT Awards
(BICTA), not only for domestic use but for the
international market.
Thirdly, the ministry will continue its efforts to
ensure safety standards in the transport and
ICT sector. This includes reducing road fatality
rates and increased accuracy in aviation weather
warning, among others.
The fourth strategy ensures that the policy
and regulatory framework is conducive to
investments and businesses by actively pursuing
initiatives, joint ventures and collaboration with
stakeholders to consolidate policy suggestions
and recommendations for formulation and review
to further facilitate industry and investment
development.
The fifth core strategy is organisational
transformation, particularly in terms of
management and work operations to serve the
public efficiently. This includes postal services,
civil aviation and land transport sectors.
Finally, the ministry aims at enhancing
international cooperation through regional
and international forums, such as the ASEAN
Transport Ministers’ Meeting (ATM) and the
ASEAN Digital Ministers’ Meeting (ADGMIN) to
develop the transport and ICT sector.
In line with the Smart Nation aspirations,
several developments have been made in
policy, transport and infocommunications
projects and new initiatives under MTIC.
Notable achievements include the launch of
Digital Economy Masterplan 2025 under Digital
Economy Council and Brunei Darussalam Road
Safety Strategic Plan 2025.
