Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi

Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei

Darussalam officially opened the Plant on April

4, 1973.

In 1977, Brunei Coldgas Sendirian Berhad

was established and took over the rights and

obligations of Coldgas Trading Limited. On

January 1, 1996, Brunei Coldgas Sdn Bhd and

Brunei LNG Limited merged to form Brunei LNG

Sdn Bhd.

Brunei LNG is currently owned by the

Government of His Majesty (50 per cent),

Mitsubishi Corporation (25 per cent) and Shell

Overseas Holdings Limited (25 per cent).

Brunei LNG Plant

Brunei LNG Plant was established in 1973

with the size of 130 hectares. The plant’s total

capacity is 7.2 million tonnes per year, with gas

supplied from the following oil fields: South

West Ampa, Fairley, Gannet, Champion, Egret,

Iron Duke, Maharaja Lela and Jamalul Alam.

There are five identical liquefaction trains

which are capable of processing 9,700m

of gas

everyday day. Gas is supplied by Brunei Shell

Petroleum and Block B Joint Venture (BBJV)

made up of Total E&P Borneo BV, Shell and

Petroleum Brunei.

In the future, the plant expects a deepwater

supply from Block CA1 (Petronas CARIGALI,

Shell Deepwater Borneo, Murphy Oil

Corporation and Mitsubishi Corporation) and

Block CA2 (Petronas CARIGALI, Murphy Oil

Corporation and Total E&P Borneo BV).

Production, People and Customers

Natural gas is Brunei Darussalam’s major

revenue earner. LNG is the main product

produced by Brunei LNG. To date, Brunei LNG

has liquefied and delivered more than 7,000

cargoes equivalent to more than 261 million

tonnes of LNG.

The company’s LNG is transported by five

A-Class LNG vessels which are owned by

Brunei Gas Carriers Sdn Bhd. The oldest vessel,

Abadi, was delivered in 2002 and the newest,

Amadi, in 2015.

Brunei LNG also produces Liquefied Petroleum

Gases (LPG) as a by-product at its bottling plant

for domestic sales by Brunei Shell Marketing.

There are currently 590 employees working

directly for Brunei LNG, of which almost

92 per cent are Bruneians in line with the

Bruneianisation Directive issued by the Ministry

of Energy, Manpower and Industry.

Brunei LNG’s customers include Tokyo Gas,

Shell, Jera, Petronas, Osaka Gas and Koch

Supply & Trading. The medium-term deal

agreement with Koch Supply & Trading Sarl

was signed in 2018. Going forward, Brunei LNG

strives to expand its customer base beyond the

existing portfolio.

Securing the future

As one of the oldest plants in the world,

Brunei LNG invests in continuous rejuvenation

activities of its assets to ensure that the plant

is reliable and safe to continuously produce and

supply LNG to its customers.

The year 2015 saw the completion of the

Tank 6 Project within budget and without any

Lost Time Injury (LTI). The tank was built to

increase net storage capacity to 280,000m

to meet customers’ current and future

requirements, following the transition from

B-Class LNG carriers which accommodates

74,500 m
