OIL & GAS

case (TRC). The company’s safety record proves

“Goal Zero” is achievable to ensure everyone

goes home safely to their families and loved

ones. BGC also scored 99.85 per cent in the area

of vessel reliability, highlighting BGC’s ability to

safely deliver LNG cargoes overseas on time.

At the centre of its localisation initiative is

BGC’s Bruneianisation Programme. The company

seeks to employ and develop local talents in the

maritime industry, with locals making up 90 per

cent of its workforce.

Behind every safe and reliable operation is

BGC’s most important asset – its people. BGC

focusses on developing Bruneian seafarers

according to international standards from cadet

level all the way up to senior management,

making them marketable in the global arena.

BGC currently employs three local captains

and six chief engineers. The company also aims

to set the benchmark for local mariners and

engineers who will be the backbone of Brunei’s

marine industry. Grooming local talents will

one day result in them becoming senior marine

professionals who will drive Brunei’s economy.

External mindset

While BGC focusses on developing local

leadership, the company maintains an external

mindset. BGC ensures their staff are updated

with the latest development and practices in

the maritime industry. This strategy is in line

with BGC’s aim to be the leading developer of

local shipping and maritime skills, in support of

Brunei Vision 2035.

As part of its ongoing commitment in promoting

In-Country Value, BGC also supports the

i-Usahawan initiative in collaboration with

MEMI. The company supports young Bruneian

entrepreneurs to start and grow their own

businesses, propose innovative ideas and build

confidence in tendering and eventually bidding

for larger scale projects.

Looking ahead, BGC aims to complete its ship

management transition to become a fully-

fledged ship manager by 2020. BGC also targets

to diversify its business, provide their maritime

expertise to develop local talents and establish

itself as a centre of maritime excellence.
